In a Rewarding Diabetes Agreement

A kid, teen, parent, or diabetes professional

  • Proposes an action change [diabetes related] for a reward for a certain time period.*
  • Once the proposal’s sent, the receiver decides if they want to sponsor or counter-propose.

RD agreements help parents and kids by changing daily dialogues from “nagging to earning.”

*We understand rewards are not the complete answer, and that taking care of diabetes is complex and frustrating. We understand good diabetes management for kids and teens involves factors not under direct control, [e.g. hormones]. Yet, we can improve communication, and lessen parent/child conflict with rewarding agreements. Since managing diabetes involves chore-like tasks, it’s okay to use short-term rewards promoting diabetes management and thus, long-term health.
